Plastics , tiny penises , and human evolution

چکیده

Health concerns about the long-term effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) often fail to reflect a sophisticated understanding of evolutionary theory or how a population will be affected by a selective pressure, even when that pressure arises from human action in the environment. Using niche construction theory, this article for a general audience seeks to explore how endocrine disruption might affect our species. The evidence suggests that EDCs may very well exert a selective influence by disrupting fertility, especially because a large number of EDCs seem to interact and target the same mechanisms. However, niche construction theory highlights the degree to which some of those changes will be reversible types of phenotypic bias and how EDCresistance is also likely to be the outcome of niche-drive selection. 1

Lice, Humans, and Microbes

Lice are small, wingless, minor ectoparasites of mammals and birds. More than 540  blood-sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) have been described with each host having its own type of louse, suggesting the cospeciation of the lice species with their host. Among these, two lice species from two different genera infest humans: Pediculus humanus and Phthirus pubis (pubic “crab” l...

Evolution: One Penis After All

Amniote penises come in many shapes but are missing from the basal tuatara. This has been taken as evidence for multiple evolutionary origins of the penis. Now, genital swellings have been found in tuatara embryos, arguing for a single origin.

At the Touch of a Button: Wipe-Clean Moulded Switches for Medical Engineering

Some people have earmarked smart plastics as a converging technology where capacitive electronics have been combined with injection moulding. Others have described them as a new type of composite technology. Fundamentally, they consist of a plastic part moulded over a blm which has had electronic components printed onto it (see image below led). ^e result is an aesthetically pleasing part with ...

Social life, evolution of intelligence, behaviour and human brain size

Social life is one of the most critical factors of the evolution of the behavior of non-human primates and humans. Several factors, such as an increase in brain size, adaptive modules, and grooming, are related to the complexities of social groups. Although some scientists have mentioned foraging as a rival hypothesis for the evolution of behavior, in this research, we tried to investigate the ...

Wetting Technologies for High-Accuracy Sink-Float Separations in Water- Based Media

The accuracy of sink-float separations in water-based media such as Magnetic Density Separation is compromised by tiny air-bubbles attached to the surface of hydrophobic materials in the feed. Separations of plastics mixtures with accuracy better than 10 kg/m 3 require a total elimination of air-bubbles by pre-wetting the surface of the feed particles with a thin film of water. Theoretical and ...
